National under-17 left arm spinner 14-year-old Ashmead Nedd captured 4-25 from
10 frugal overs to spearhead the National U-19 team to a 41-run win against the Trinidad & Tobago Academy U-19s despite a 78-run opening stand between the inform Keagan Simmons (30) and Trevon James (50) at Bourda yesterday in their second game of their eight-day trip to Guyana.
Guyana batted first in sultry conditions and lost their first wicket with just 13 runs on the board when the powerfully built Clevon Kalawan bowled Bashkar Yadram for eight, but top order batsmen Raymond Perez who reached the boundary twice in 45 and Parmesh Parsotam, who stroked five fours in 42 offered fight to Trinidadian bowlers on a slow track.
The T&T Academy team got right back into the game as Quammie Mohamed, a six foot fast bowler who reminded many of West Indies Captain Jason Holder struck twice, Kalawan another six foot pacer also struck twice before spinner Emilio Gopaul (3-20) reduced the Guyanese to 134-8 and in danger of falling below 150.
But the versatile Nedd who plays for Marian Academy in the National School cricket League joined Parsotam to add 50 for the ninth to give the South Americans the impetus to reach
190 before they were all out with 1.2 overs to left in their innings.
When the lads from Carnival Country began their run chase they were off to a solid start with the left-handed 16-year-old Simmons following up his accomplished 71 in the washed out two-day encounter against the same side at the same venue over the weekend, again stroked the ball with plenty of confidence and along with Trevon James, who hit six well timed boundaries in an entertaining even fifty, added 78 for the first wicket before Simmons was caught and bowled by Nedd.
When the right-handed James was bowled by Left-arm spinner Akieni Adams for 30 with two fours, the T&T unit were still in the hunt but Kristoff Lewis (1) was bowled by Nedd and the burly left-hander Jean Paul Rockie (12) was run out, the visitors had slipped to 97-4 and never recovered as only T&T’s National U-19 left hander Byran Boodam and Gopaul reached double figures.
Boodram, whose only boundary was a swept six into the dilapidated Kenny Wishart Stand, was last dismissed by Kasim Khan for 25. Kasim Khan (2-6) and Adams (2-30) supported Nedd.
The Academy team will have a break today before they travel over 100 miles to oppose the Berbice U-19s at Albion in the second largest of Guyana’s three Counties tomorrow in a 50-over affair. They play their final game at Wales against the Demerara U-19’s in another 50 overs game.
