Passengers traveling in an East Coast minibus endured several minutes of terror last night, after gunmen shot their driver, while trying to board his vehicle.
Jermaine Burrowes, 28, was shot in the side at around 22.00 hrs, shortly after he had picked up passengers at the Gifland Mall at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.
The wounded man managed to drive his vehicle for a short distance before veering into a trench at Blygezeight Gardens, East Coast Demerara. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was still undergoing emergency surgery at press time.
Some of the passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated at the GPHC.
One woman, who lives on the East Bank of Demerara, said that the driver had picked up her and some other passengers at the Giftland Mall, located at Liliendaal. She said that the bus proceeded towards Georgetown, but shortly after, two men flagged the driver down. However, when the driver stopped, an occupant of the vehicle apparently suspected that the two men were robbers and pulled the door shut.
At that point, one of the men pointed a gun at Burrowes and shot him.
Kaieteur News understands that with passengers screaming and telling Burrowes to drive, the wounded man continued in the direction of Georgetown, before losing control of his vehicle and ending up in a trench.
The woman said that she lost her handbag containing her mobile phone and other valuables.
Another woman, who was sitting next to Burrowes, said that the vehicle had first left Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, and had stopped in the vicinity of Turkeyen, when she saw a man point a gun at Burrowes and shoot him.
Up to late last night, heavily-armed police ranks were still scouring areas on the East Coast of Demerara for the gunmen.
At present, police have been battling to stem a spate of brutal armed robberies throughout the country.
Recent police statistics revealed that there have been 22 robbery-murders, and 791 gunpoint robberies at the end of November.
