The battle lines will be drawn from today among sixteen association teams from West Demerara (6) and five each from East Bank and the East Demerara Football Associations as the second edition of the Stag Super XVI knockout competition gets underway with two matches.
First timers Beavers FC of West Demerara and East Bank’s Herstelling Raiders will be seeking to make a big impression when they get proceedings underway in the first game at 18:00hrs. The main event will see East Demerara’s BV Triumph United taking on home team Uitvlugt in what is anticipated to be a fierce clash.
BV will be looking do better than last year having excited after their first game, losing to defending champions Grove Hi Tech 2-0. Uitvlugt will be no easy team to get past, they are the current number one team in the WDFA and will be looking to maintain that billing as they make a strong claim for the top prize of 1.5 million dollars.
At the helm for BV will be veteran marksman Delroy Deen who will find able support from the likes of Quacey and Yonel Price, Collis Jones Jr., Marcus Havercome, Clifton and Collin Bacchus, Akim Curry, Reon Hopkinson, Lorenzo Phillips, Mark Herbert, Donald Evans and Kevin Williams.

Uitvlugt, a mixture of seasoned and young players will be led by former national defender Orville Bobb, former national junior Lennox Torrington, Jamal Petty, Seon Bobb, Owen McGarrell, Keon and Kevin Duke, Daniel Floy, Alex Moore, Montel Dainty, Nikel Persaud and Jonathan Leitch.
There will be no room for complacency as only the winners will advance to the next stage. Teams will be eager to stamp their authority early in order to put pressure on the other side.
Herstelling Raiders FC, based at Farm on the Eats Bank is the youngest team in the competition; ever since their debut just over two years ago, have been improving with every match. They boost some exciting young players including national Under-17 goalkeeper Quazim Yussuf.
The man who is credited with the formation of the club, Devon Winter (player/coach) will be on the pitch marshalling his young troops and with the likes of exciting forwards Seon Alfred and the multi-talented Ricky Debidyal, the Raiders will be aiming to start on a winning note.
Home team Beavers have been around for some time and will be no pushovers on home turf with Kip Austin, Andrew and Timothy St. Hill, Fabian Semple, Kenneth Bess and Stephon Nelson leading their quest for victory.
Guyana Football Federation President Wayne Forde and Director of Sport Christopher Jones are expected to be on hand for the opening matches and will share remarks with the teams and fans before the ceremonial and traditional kick off of the tournament at the Leonora Football Field.
The winning team will walk away with $1.5 million, losing finalist $500,000 while the third and fourth placed teams will pocket $300,000 and $200,000, respectively.
Kick off time is 18:00hrs.
