The “Oracle” is gone. It happens to all of us. Our authority goes one day. It is said that Roger Khan made thirty-four calls to him when Khan was hiding in Suriname.
This is a tragic dimension of this country’s history and it would be even more tragic if the government does not commission an inquiry into this period.
Captain Clark, granted asylum in the US after his trial, could reveal oceans of information. No doubt those in high positions would be revealed like the Oracle. An inquiry into the Roger Khan escapades is something most people in this country expect. Should it happen it will create a huge legacy for David Granger.
The story of the Oracle is the tall tale of “big shots” that have status and money in Guyana but no integrity. We see them at the cocktail circuit, official ceremonies, diplomatic functions, state functions, but behind the veneer of authority are the Greek mythological monsters that devour this country.
So the Oracle is gone. He will have to wait until Jagdeo returns for his return to take place. But that is a fairytale story. Jagdeo too is gone. It is doubtful that the former, Chief Justice’s ruling that the two term presidential limit was unconstitutional will succeed in the Court of Appeal or the CCJ. But let us say that the present Government is uncertain, it can always resort to a referendum to retain the two-term clause. One would like to think that a decision either way will be had before the next election in 2020.
The PPP could eulogize Bharrat Jagdeo as much as it wants, he will not be the President again of this country. Of course all things are possible. The PPP could win in 2020 and behind the scenes; Jagdeo could bring back the Oracle. If you are a betting person I would advise you against betting on that nonsensical scenario. Like the Oracle, the PPP is gone too.
What will the Oracle do? What does anyone do when authority goes? They just have to adjust. That is life. We may think that our power will never go but life takes away power. Fidel Castro fell short by a few months of achieving fifty years as Head of the Cuban Government and State. Illness intervened.
Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, deteriorating health forced Castro out of power. But it is doubtful he keeps to himself. His brother has succeeded him and no doubt from his sick bed, Castro dictates to his sibling. If any human thought that power would last forever, it was Fidel Castro.
Coming close behind Castro are the protégés of Cheddi Jagan. The PPP under both Cheddi and Janet Jagan, was convinced that the PPP was electorally unbeatable. The party passed on that fictional invincibility to their underlings. The hierarchy of the PPP – Jagdeo, Ramotar, Reepu Daman Persaud, Ralph Ramkarran, Teixeira, Rohee, Luncheon, Komal Chand, Hydar Ally, Frank Anthony. Indra Chandarpal and others too numerous to mention –saw the PPP as unbeatable.
The story of Ralph Ramkarran’s alienation was due to the fact that he knew he was cheated out of the Presidency in 2011 when Jagdeo engineered Ramotar into the presidential slot.
One can ask of the PPP leaders, the same question put to the Oracle above- what happens when the authority goes? I met one of the children of one of the top leaders of the PPP on Wellington Street, outside the shoe store, Chetson’s. He said that from what he knows, many of the PPP leaders have not recovered from the psychological discovery – the PPP has lost power and is not in charge of Guyana.
He opined that he thinks it will take a long time for them to adjust.
There is one extremely important distinction between the PNC’s psychology of defeat in 1992 and the PPP’s in 2015. The PNC was always an insecure party in power after 1968 because of successive election controversies. It was as if they knew that one day the edifice would come tumbling down.
They expected that moment to unfold at any moment. Not so for the PPP. The invincibility drove into their psyche the instinct of ownership. So we return to where we started – what will the Oracle do now that he has no more authority? One thing I know he cannot do –sue me. Where in this column I have been libelous? Who is the Oracle?
