The young man who lost his left eye during a confrontation with police following a botch robbery at Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, Sunday morning is well known to lawmen.
Devon Forde has been described by police as a known criminal, having been charged previously with carjacking a few years ago.
Police confirmed that Forde was one of three men who robbed a taxi driver and stole his car back in 2009.
However a police source who spoke to this newspaper could not say if Forde and his accomplices were ever convicted for that crime.
On another occasion, Forde was also charged with simple larceny when it was alleged that he stole a bicycle. That case was dismissed.
But he is almost certain to serve time for last Sunday’s robbery during which he contemplated raping his victim.
Police say that about 03:00hrs on Sunday, Cheryl Embrack, 50, of Lot 812 Block Y, Golden Grove Housing Scheme, EBD, was entering her home when two men attacked her. One of them was armed with a handgun. The men took her upstairs into the house and took away a stereo set and a cell phone.
While the robbery was in progress, neighbours informed the police who responded and encountered the perpetrators as they were leaving the scene.
The police reportedly came under fire and returned fire during which one of the men was shot and injured and an unlicenced .32 pistol with 10 matching rounds was recovered.
According to a source, police also retrieved a cellular phone from the shot man’s pocket which turned out to be the victim’s property.
The wounded man was later identified as Forde who is currently under police guard in hospital.
“He got to thank (President) Granger dat he still alive, because dem police could’a kill he. Now he living off we tax money,” one angry visitor to the hospital remarked.
