– Police urge drivers to be alert
Over the past two weeks, more than 11 taxi drivers were lured to Craig Sideline Dam, East Bank Demerara (EBD) and robbed at knifepoint by a man of African descent, who hires them from as far as the East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Ranks at the Grove Police Station have received more than 11 reports of such incidents.
There are reports that the individual, who has a low haircut and is medium built, has a woman working with him.
According to information received, the man would go to different locations and observed taxi drivers, after which, he would hire those he considered “easy to handle” to take him to Craig Sideline Dam- an area which has no lights and is deserted at nights. The suspect would strike at nights only.
He would tell the taxi drivers that he would be picking up his girlfriend at the aforementioned location. While there, he would rob them at knife point and escape with all their valuables.
By the time the police arrive, the man would disappear.
The victims are drivers from West Bank Demerara, West Coast Demerara, Georgetown and East Coast Demerara.
All the drivers have reported that they were told the same story by the suspect. They were all lured to the same location also.
Police are urging taxi drivers to be on the alert for the suspect.
