In an effort to improve production within the sugar belt and to stamp out dishonesty there has been a major shake up at the Guysuco Rose Hall Estate.
This also supports GuySuCo’s new approach to manage the sugar industry.
A number of factors influenced the decision, chief being the underperformance of the management there, thievery and dishonest practice and reports of sabotage allegedly by both workers and management.
Recently the estate has been lagging in terms of performance. This is despite being one of the best performers earlier in the second crop.
Personnel attached to Guysuco Head Office during the week descended on the location and caught some senior staff napping.
Some were sent home, whilst others were sent on administrative leave pending investigations. Others were transferred with immediate effect.
Recently there were reports of sabotage at the estate. For the past few weeks the factory has not been performing as expected with reports of the factory boilers not having enough steam, thus the low production.
On one occasion the boiler was left without water.
Rose Hall was one of the first estates to go on strike when GAWU called on the workers to down tools. However most of the sugar workers were eager to work and blamed management for not burning cane and for colluding with GAWU to make the strike effective.
There were also reports of some middle management telling workers to stay home and threats being issued.
Another concern by the workers is the sudden frequency with which they are not offered work, accusing Guysuco of not requiring them to work.
Among those sent packing is the Estate Manager, who had earlier been sent on 70 days leave. He is reportedly transferred to Uitvlugt. The Factory Manager has been transferred to Wales with immediate effect.
The Production Manager has also been transferred.
The senior technician and head of the Factory Lab has been sent off pending investigation.
The Field Workshop has been severely hit with the top two being sent off the job pending investigation.
A senior staff member is also in hot water. The previous Field Manager had earlier applied for sick leave and early pension.
The controversial Factory Manager’s Secretary who was accused of having an affair with the former Chief Executive Officer, has been transferred from that position.
Both the Estate and Factory Managers had backed the move.
A few other workers have been dismissed with immediate effect after being found wanting as investigations continue.
Personnel at the Guysuco Head Office would only say that what was done is intended to improve production and efficiency.
