Guyana Football Association/Banks DIH football championships
The Guyana Police Force scored a last gasp goal 3 minutes before the final whistle to defeat Eastveldt 2-1 when the curtains went up on the 5th edition of the Guyana Football Association/Banks DIH Football Championships at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eveleary, last Sunday evening.
The first two goals of the match were scored from the penalty spot during exchanges in the first half. Policeman, Leron Charles, sunk his team’s first goal after he was gifted a penalty from a foul inside the box in the 5th minute of play.
As if conforming to a script, Eastveldt received a similar gift three minutes later after David George was fouled in the box and dutifully breached the Police custodian to equalize the situation in the 8th minute. Thereafter, a keen tussle ensued, as each team attempted to gain the ascendency. Both were unsuccessful and went in at the halfway mark stalemated at a goal apiece. The two teams battled ferociously but failed to breach each other’s defence, that is, until Keron Boston broke away and sunk the decisive goal for the lawmen.
In the feature attraction, Western Tigers’ players enjoyed a field day at
the expense of Hope FC of Berbice, humiliating them 6-0 after successes from Dwayne Ali (21), Randolph Wagner (39,70), Daron Benjamin (60) and Jamal Pedro (72,85).
Activities continue this Saturday evening from 19:00hrs when NA United tackle Blackwater and Rosignol FC face Cougars at the Number 5 Ground, Berbice. Sixteen teams are battling for top honours and they conformed to a march past before President of the Guyana Football Association, Clifton Hicken and other top officials just after the first match had concluded.
