The Executive Committee of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) has confirmed that their flagship National Championships will be held in two segments with the senior competition set for January 14-17 and the junior contest January 21-24, 2016.
“The 22 category Championships was not held in the last three years for varying reasons (which included) international schedule of players and sponsorship for the 22 category event,” a release from the GTTA President, Godfrey Munroe said yesterday.
“The Executive felt it was very critical that every effort is made to have this Championship given its critical importance to structuring the sport, more so at the commencement of the year, which would lend to structuring ranking, selection and other aspects,” the release continued.
The GTTA believes that the keys to structuring the sport includes (a) providing an environment for the legacy and history of the sport with crowning and naming of national champions in the respective categories into the annals of history of the sport; (b) establishment of national ranking system, which would guide the selection process and is critical to transparency; (c) establishing a benchmark to which players must aspire in view of improving the competitiveness of the sport domestically and (d) allows for the promotion and marketability of players among other benefits.
“The Championship truly provides an environment to expose and showcase the next generation of champions. With several of the players coming off their successful sojourn at the US Open Team Championships, the association feels that the 2016 (National) Championships makes for a very competitive championship filled with keen rivalries among the players in the various categories,” the release indicated.
This is given the abundance and nucleus of young emerging and immensely talented players with lots of potential currently playing the sport. The association said that early announcement would allow players to train in preparation for the Championships.
In addition, it would allow players residing overseas to participate, which would develop a better competitive structure. According to the GTTA, the tournament is being held outside of any exam period, which would lend to greater participation as anticipated.
