-amount changed from $10,000 to $10,000,000
Two detectives placed themselves in hot water when they changed the amount on a bail receipt from $10,000 into $10,000,000 with the aim of extorting the difference from the relative of a man they had arrested. Their silly mistake was to change the figure alone, leaving the amount in words the same.
For their stupidity the ranks, who are stationed at the Sparendaam Police Station, have been placed under close arrest, with the possibility of facing the court soon on forgery charges.
It all happened last Friday when they released a suspect on $10,000 bail. Kaieteur News understands that before sending the suspect home, the two detectives hatched a plan to extract money from the suspect’s grandmother who they learnt was “loaded with cash”.
They conspired with the suspect to alter the receipt and take it to the woman, purporting it to show that he needed a large amount to post as bail. All went well when the man took the bail receipt, now showing $10,000,000, home to his grandmother and asked her to help him post the bail.
The woman, out of concern for her grandson, handed over $2.5M, for him to take to the police.
But before the money could be handed over to the police, the suspect’s grandmother became suspicious and checked the receipt again. She observed that while the figure showed $10,000,000, the wording of the receipt stated “ten thousand dollars”.
The woman immediately realised that she was duped and she hurried to the Sparendaam Police Station where she alerted senior officers.
An investigation was launched and her grandson cracked under the pressure. He implicated the two detectives, telling investigators that it was they who put him up to the plan.
A confrontation was held and the two ranks were placed under close arrest, pending further investigations.
