Confidence tricksters are using the busy Christmas season to dump bogus cheques on unsuspecting members of the business community.
One popular auto spares dealer is said to have handed over some $3.8 M in spares to a ‘customer’ who presented him with what appeared to be an authentic Manager’s cheque.
The fraudsters reportedly handed over the cheque on a Friday, which meant that it was not until the following Monday that the victim discovered that the cheque was a forgery.
Kaieteur News confirmed that fraudsters attempted the same scam on the owners of a popular General Store.
An individual visited the establishment on a Friday with a $4.8M ‘Bank of Guyana’ Manager’s cheque.
The individual reportedly stated that he was an employee of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) and was uplifting fittings for the RDC.
An official from the General Store said that the signatures on the cheque “looked genuine.” However, the store officials, aware of the ‘manager’s cheque’ scam, informed the individual that he would not be able to uplift his supplies until the Tuesday in the new week.
By then, they had already discovered that the cheque was a forgery.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum had recently cautioned members of the business community of transacting business on Fridays with Manager’s cheques, since they would have to wait until Monday to check the authenticity of the cheques.
