Jacobs’ late afternoon strikes give Jaguars advantage
Set 326 to win, Jamaica Scorpions were 82-3 at the end of the penultimate day of their fifth round PCL Four-Day cricket Franchise game against Guyana Jaguars at Sabina Park yesterday needing to score 244 runs on the final day to deny the visitors a fifth consecutive win this season.
Defending Champions Jaguars need seven wickets to maintain their healthy lead on the points table and move 85 points. The opening session today could determine the result and an intriguing last day is anticipated.
Scores: Jaguars (189 & 282) Scorpions 146 & 82-3).
Off-spinner Steven Jacobs has so far picked up 2-13 from 10 overs, while the lively Keon Joseph has the other wicket to fall.
Jacobs had Andre McCarty, the only Scorpions’ player with a century in this tournament to his name, stumped for 16 and trapped John Campbell LBW for 26.
This was after Paul Palmer (13) edged Joseph to the Keeper to make the breakthrough with 35 runs on the board.
But Antiguan Devon Thomas (20) and Tamar Lambert (0) saw their team to the close without further loss knowing that their task of winning or even saving the game is far from done.
Earlier, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, playing first match for the season and his 10th at this level, fell 19 short of his first century, while Anthony Bramble supported with 37 as leg-spinner Damion Jacobs took 4-78, while left-arm spinner Nikita Miller and pacer Marquino Mindley took two wickets each.
The Jaguars began the day on 133-3 enjoying a lead of 172 with Chanderpaul on 39 and Bajan Raymon Reifer on 12, but the left-handed Reifer (24) soon edged Mindley to Carlton Baugh to leave the Jaguars on 158-4
Chris Barnwell (13) edged Jacobs to the keeper as his team slipped to 183-5 before the 19 year-old Chanderpaul, whose father Shiv Chanderpaul missed this match, fell to Mindley on the stroke of Lunch at 220-6 after surpassing his previous highest score of 43.
After the Interval the Jaguars posted their 250 but just when Bramble was beginning to look like a threat to the Jamaican Franchise, he was LBW to Jacobs for 35.
Jacobs was removed by Miller for 11 without addition to the score while Miller struck again just after the South Americans had pushed their lead past 300 when Gudakesh Motie (14) caught at 265 after hanging around for a while, Jacobs had his fourth victim when he ended the innings by getting rid of Joseph for two.
The Jaguars go into today’s final day holding the advantage since batting on a last day track against the three-prong spin attack of Steven Jacobs, Veerasammy Permaul and Motie will be no easy task.
