When the second edition of the Josiah KO Cup sponsored by Vitamalt Plus/Rainforest Water and organized by the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) kicked off at the Den Amstel Community ground, there were contrasting wins for Uitvlugt and Pouderoyen.
Uitvlugt were easy 4-0 winners over Bagotsville led by a Seon Bobb brace. Kevin Duke also got on the score sheet along with Daniel Floy.
In the feature game of the night, eventual winners Pouderoyen and Eagles had battled to a 1-1 stalemate in regulation and extra time before penalty kicks were employed to decide the winner.
Pouderoyen’s goalkeeper Sherwin Bernard was outstanding between the uprights as he orchestrated his side’s win.
Pouderoyen took the early lead through a Nathan Allicock strike midway through the opening half but that was cancelled out by Jewel Stephen’s goal following good work by Kerrron Schmidt whose shot was initially blocked by the custodian just before the halftime whistle.
The advantage swayed back and forth for both sides during the second half with neither being able to break the deadlock as defenders and goalkeepers stood firm.
With penalty kicks the last resort to decide the winner, Pouderoyen’s man between the uprights, Sherwin Bernard, took it home for his side to ensure their advance to the next round.
Action continued last evening when Young Achievers faced Stewartville and home team Den Amstel opposed Beavers. The semifinals will be played on December 20 with the final and third placed set for Leonora on December 27th.
