Dear Editor,
I currently do not live in Guyana but I make it a habit to read the news on Guyana daily. My thoughts are that we spend far too much time bashing politicians without being agents of change.
Anyone who regards himself/herself as an agent of change must try to reform the system that allows people to operate the way they do.
Currently in Guyana we seem to be on the wrong course. There are people who use the public space to criticize. Politicians seem to play up to their base and exonerate themselves by blaming the other side.
We had years of corruption and dictatorship under the PNC that ravaged a beautiful country and brought us to our knees.
The PPP/ CIVIC under Cheddie Jagan offered a new day to Guyanese but with his demise his successors lost his vision for a better Guyana. The current government is heading in the wrong direction and the golden bird is flying past us.
Delay in making good use of opportunities is proving detrimental. Instead of trying to defend mistakes that are being made, why not acknowledge them and move on with corrective actions? The public will respect you.
Let us have complete separation of the three arms of government with the judiciary becoming totally independent and impartial. The judiciary will also have to handle cases expeditiously.
I remembered the case brought against a former PNC Minister of Housing by a private citizen. The Minister was found guilty of corruption and forced to resign. Today we are hearing every day of corruption and millions of dollars are spent on investigations.
Did no one think of moving to the courts when the acts were being perpetuated or were the courts muzzled?
I do not think the latter is true. It is just that the politicians wanted people to bash up and create the impression that they are acting in the best interest of the population.
In conclusion I wish to encourage all the political commentators to work to reform the political system. Personnel change is never the answer. We need to change the system that allows people to do what they are doing
