Police are hoping that they have finally made a breakthrough in the murder of Chinese businessman Zhenjz Su, who was bound and hacked to death in his Mandela Avenue, East Ruimveldt restaurant four months ago.
They have detained an 18-year-old man who they say may be one of the bandits who killed Su, and badly battered his wife before escaping with an undisclosed sum of cash.
The suspect was arrested last Thursday and is being detained at the Golden Grove Police Station.
Kaieteur News understands that the youth, who is from East Ruimveldt, was chopped in the head last Thursday during an altercation. It was when he went to make a report that police informed him that he was a suspect in Su’s murder and took him into custody. The teen has reportedly insisted that he was with his girlfriend at the time of the murder.
Su, 35, was found gagged and bound in the kitchen area of the Jade Stone Restaurant, on August 7. He had been chopped to the head.
There are reports that the intruders killed Su after he refused to open a money-safe for them. The intruders also inflicted a savage beating on the businessman’s wife, 32-year-old Fei Su, who was attacked in her bedroom. Some of her teeth were knocked out.
A bloodstained cutlass was found at the scene. Detectives also found a piece of lumber that they believe the intruders used to club the man’s wife.
The victims have five dogs, but no one apparently heard the animals barking while the family was under attack.
The bandits had also tampered with surveillance cameras on the property.
It is believed that the killers gained entry via a door in the bottom flat that the business couple had mistakenly left open. Zhenjz Su, a source said, would close the restaurant at around 21:00 hrs and attend to customers through that door.
A friend of the family said that after killing Su, the bandits used the dead man’s keys to open a door leading to the couple’s living quarters.
Police said that Fei Su, the wife, was confronted in her home above the restaurant by a group of men who assaulted her and took away an undisclosed sum of money before escaping.
On checking later, she found the body of her husband downstairs on the kitchen floor with chop wounds to his head.
Police had detained, but later released a suspect.
Some members of the business community have posted a $2M reward for information that could lead to the arrest of his killers. Persons with information can call telephone number 662-4076 and all information will be confidential.
