Reckless driving on the Good Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD) Public Road, allegedly caused the death of
50-year-old Youghraj Singh of Lot 30 B Coverden, on the East Bank Demerara (EBD) early yesterday.
The father of three was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation a little after 02:00 hrs yesterday.
The police said that investigations so far have revealed that Singh was driving the vehicle along the roadway, allegedly at a fast rate, when he lost control and collided with a utility pole.
The accident occurred some time after 01:00 hr yesterday, just after Singh had delivered a truck load of sand for a block maker at Good Hope, and was making his way home.
Madera Singh, the man’s daughter, said that she was informed that her father swerved from an object on the roadway and ended up hitting the utility pole.
She said that he somehow managed to swerve back into his lane where he then collapsed in the truck.
According to Singh, early yesterday one of her neighbours called and informed her that there was news at the sand pit, that her father was involved in an accident on the ECD.
Just as she was talking with her neighbour, she received a telephone call from one of her father’s friends, who informed her that he had taken the man to the hospital after finding him unconscious.
“When I went to the hospital, he was already dead. The doctor said that he died on arrival. I saw him lying on the bed and there was blood coming out from his nose and mouth,” the younger Singh related.
She said that her father’s friend, a truck driver, told her that he was in Good Hope and that he passed and saw her father had parked on the road. “He said that he thought my father had a flat tyre so he stopped to help but then he realized that he didn’t have a flat.”
According to Singh, the man went to the driver’s side of the truck and saw the father of three in a sitting position with his head on the steering wheel and thought that he was sleeping.
“He said he held onto his shirt to wake him but when he pulled, my father didn’t move then he realized that something was wrong. He and the man my father took sand for took him to the hospital,” the younger Singh related.
The woman said that her father was in the truck for more than 15 minutes before he was taken to hospital.
“The incident happened a short distance from where he dropped off the sand and no one offered any help. People said they only see the truck parked up there and didn’t know it was an accident,” An angry Singh revealed.
A Post Mortem examination will be done on Friday.
