Retrieve Raiders (RR) defeated Flames 68-31 while Victory Valley Royals edged past Amelia’s Ward Jets 60-57 when play in the Banks DIH Malta Supreme, basketball championship continued at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court last Monday night.
Derwin Robertson led the way for RR with 16 points with support from Derwin Robertson, Duel Garner and Keon Cameron who sunk 11 points apiece while Alexander Rose chipped in with 10 points. Aubrey Johnson scored 10 points for the Flames in what was eventually an inconsequential effort.
The Raiders exhibited great team work and enjoyed a comfortable 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. They then employed superb trapping defense to stifle the scoring rate of the Flames in the second quarter, restricting them to just three points in that session thus taking the honours in the first half 29-10. The Raiders tightened their grip throughout the third period and widened their advantage 46-19 before securing the overall victory 68-31.
The Victory Valley Royals/Amelia’s Ward Jets match was a toss-up and down the stretch as the Jets front court men, Allister and Adrian Webster, combined with court shooting guards, Orrin Rose and Parrish Cadogan, in a furious battle to seize the initiative.
The Jets were off to a good start with Rose looking dangerous from behind the arc. They eventually secured a 20-7 cushion at the end of the first quarter. Displaying staunch grit and determination, the Royals rallied back into contention to assume the lead at the end of the first half, 30-25 with superb all round team play which eventually sealed the win for them. Their back up players, Nevin Glenn and Harold Adams scored 17 and 14 points, respectively.
The top players for the Jets were Allister Webster, with 15 points while Rose, Adrian Webster and Parrish Cadogan scored 10 points apiece.
The tournament continues tonight with two other potentially exciting duels at the same venue; Bankers Trust Falcons face Royals at 19:00hrs while Half Mile Bulls seek their second win against Jets starting at 21:00hrs.
