– released on $200,000 bail
A 28-year-old housewife accused of swindling more than $7M from her friend, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, yesterday, to answer 17 fraud-related charges, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The woman, Sandy Balkaran, of Lot A 105 Duncan Street, Bel Air, Georgetown, is accused of defrauding Prakash Mangar of the money between last March and April.
The court heard that the woman was given the money by several individuals on behalf of Mangar to purchase clothing for a boutique. But instead, Balkaran converted the money to her own use and benefit.
Balkaran was not required to plead to the charges. She was granted $200,000 bail.
An Attorney for Balkaran requested that she be released on reasonable bail, after highlighting that she has no pending matter or previous conviction.
The lawyer informed the court that her client once shared a friendship with the complainant. Balkaran’s Attorney pointed out that the relationship was severed after Mangar sent a box of sex toys to her client.
The Attorney stated that her client has been cooperating with the police investigation and was released on $100,000 station bail back in April. She stated, too, that her client has been reporting to the police station periodically.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones requested that Balkaran be granted substantial bail. He informed the court that the complainant is overseas.
The matter will be heard again on January 13.
