More than 700 residents benefited from a medical outreach, conducted by the New Doctor’s Clinic in collaboration with the Mahdia District Hospital, last week.
The five-day outreach saw villagers from Tumatumari, Micobie, Campbelltown, Princeville and Mahdia being offered services in the area of cancer screening, ECG testing, egg testing, dental care, ultrasound, general check-up and optometry. The outreach team comprised 14 health care professionals from the New Doctor’s Clinic.
Regional Health Officer, Ravendra Dudhnath, lauded the exercise as a major contribution to the health sector in the Region. He stated that pregnant women, who would usually have to spend over $48,000 to travel to Georgetown for an ultrasound, were offered the service free of charge. He stated that the medical aid has helped his own team to better monitor and treat pregnant mothers into a safe delivery.
Women were offered contraceptive counselling, family planning counselling, IUD insertion and IUD removal. A total of 122 patients benefited from eye testing, screening and correction of refractive error such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, presbyopia, funduscopy, retinosocopy and ocular disease screening.
Some patients were also referred to secondary and tertiary health care facilities after check-up by the team.
Managing Director of the Clinic, Satyendra Khemraj, stated that the outreach was successful and they were looking forward for a follow-up exercise at a later date. He said persons who were suffering from chronic diseases were able to be treated and counselled on their diet and exercise.
He said that people living in such remote areas were unlikely to have access to this type of health care.
