…as probe begins into missing law books, computer parts
Permanent Secretary attached to the Ministry of Legal Affairs, Indira Ananjit, has been asked to proceed on administrative leave to facilitate an ongoing audit into the disappearance of millions of dollars worth of law books and computer parts.
Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister, Basil Williams, informed the media yesterday that Ananjit has been asked to remain off the job for 52 days so that the auditors can do their job.
He said that she has been off the job for about three weeks now.
Williams indicated that the Ministry only found out that the books were missing after the discovery by the auditors. This audit referred to by Williams has no connections to the audits being carried out by the State Asset Recovery Unit. This one is being conducted by the Auditor General’s office.
Ananjit has served at the Ministry since July 2012. The period being examined is from 2013 to present.
Williams told the media that the missing Commonwealth Law Books are valued at some $2.5M and the computer parts are estimated over $2M as well.
The Legal Affairs Minister stated, “The PS authorized those purchases and the books cannot be found.”
Williams hopes the auditors will complete their work soon, and give a plausible explanation on where the item has disappeared to.
In the interim, Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator, Melissa Tucker, has been appointed to act as the Ministry’s P.S.
The Attorney General told the media that, as far as he knows, there has been no other major discrepancy discovered by the auditors so far, “but we have to wait and see.”
