It was a fusion of cultures when the Hebrew Family of Guyana Sisterhood, celebrated its 18th annual Evening of Elegance recently. The extravagant affair, which was held under the theme ‘Celebrating Cultural Diversity’, was held at the Georgetown Club, Camp Street, Georgetown.
Those in attendance were treated to entertaining presentations from the Amerindian, African, Chinese and East Indian cultures.
The soulful sisters and brothers from the Hebrew Family of Guyana, the House of Israel, ACDA and Kenric Cheeks, showcased their phenomenal dancing through song and drums. In similar fashion, Charmaine Blackman charmed the crowd with beautiful renditions from Bob Marley and Itana, just to name a few. Also ‘Indus Voices’ entertained the audience with a beautiful love song.
By the same token, the surreal fusion of various African drums and the Indian table, saw guests of various ethnicities leaving their seats to join in an impromptu unity dance to the beats. This was probably the highlight of this year’s event, as it allowed for people of different cultures to dance on one stage to an amalgamation of drums.
Food was certainly not lacking at this auspicious event. Heavenly Foods Soul Vegetarian catered in style to guests, and certainly enticed their taste buds with delicious cuisines from each ethnic group represented.
Additionally, a group of modest models wowed the attendees as they displayed snippets of classical and contemporary cultural – casual and evening – garments of the cultures.
The event was rated a success. In a statement, the Hebrew Family of Guyana’s Sisterhood expressed “heartwarming thanks to the sponsors who came on board.”
Among the sponsors were Jochelle’s Magnetic Craft, Idea Graphics, Genesis Fitness Express, Fun Park Rentals, the Ministry of Education, Department of Culture Youth and Sport, Edward. B. Beharry and Company Limited, Prem’s Electrical and the Ministry of Tourism.
