When Bollywood star, Preity Zinta’s fans heard that she was coming to Guyana to perform, it was like the best news they had received after a long time. Some of them came from as far as Berbice to see the actress
perform on local soil.
Thousands of fans patiently stood at the Giftland Mall until midnight on Saturday, half awake, just to see Zinta’s performance—one they thought would have been mesmerizing and mind-blowing as in some of her movies.
But they were wrong. When the Bollywood A-list star came on stage, her first set of words were: “Hi Guyana” followed by “I would not be performing tonight.”
This statement made many of the already angry fans walk out since they were informed that the actress would be performing and would be on stage as early as 22:00 hrs to entertain the crowd.
Preity Zinta was the last person to come on stage and instead of entertaining the audience, who only attended the show to see her perform, she told them what her friends advised her to eat while in Guyana.
The concert came to an end after her short speech.
Along with Zinta, Indian soap actress and actor, Sriti Jha and Shabbir Ahiuwalia from Kumkum Bhagya; Shakti Mohan, winner of Zee TV’s dance reality show, Dance India Dance; Shibani Kashyap, a singer from India; and Gurmeet Choudhary, also from Dance India arrived from India early Saturday for the show.
It was actually Choudhary, Shabbir Ahiuwalia and Sriti Jha, who entertained the crowd. A muscular Gurmeet Choudhary had the girls going crazy when he took his shirt off during one of his dance performances.
At one time, he jumped off the stage and started dancing on the tables in the VIP section—this had the crowd screaming on top of their lungs, asking for more. He was seen taking pictures with his fans.
The Indian soap stars also did a good job.
Initially, the promoter, Aleem Hussain, had said that no local artistes would be performing but there were local dancers throughout the show. The local dancers performed more than the foreigners.
The majority of the songs sung by Shibani Kashyap had the Guyanese audience clueless. They were unaware of her music. Her last three songs had a section of the crowd dancing as she sang.
In the general section, persons were of the opinion that there would be a seating area, since there was row and seat number on the tickets, but this was not the case.
In addition to the tickets, persons had to pay $1000 for a chair. There were persons who went to the show on a tight budget and could not have afforded to purchase a chair. They were forced to stand from 19:00hrs to after midnight- only to be disappointed in the end.
One young woman, who was in the general section, purchased a chair. She said when she look around and saw old women standing, she felt “miserable.”
“Everyone went there to see Preity perform. We waited until midnight and she didn’t do anything. The promoter should have said that she would be making an appearance. She spent less than half an hour on stage,” a local fan stressed.
During Shabbir Ahiuwalia and Sriti Jha dance performances, the music came to a stop more than 15 times.
Many assumed that the DJ might have been drunk since he continuously mixed the song to which the two celebrities were dancing.
