Half Mile Bulls triumphed over Block 22 Flames 64-54 but Retrieve Raiders crushed Bankers Trust Falcons 82-23 to begin their quest when the Linden Amateur Basketball Association’s (LABA) Open Christmas Open basketball championship bounced off Saturday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court.
Playing in the night’s opener the Bulls were led to their win by Dennis Niles who registered a game high 19 points, while teammate Jamal Bethune supported with 10 for the Bulls who took control early as they led 16-13 after the first quarter and when half time came were ahead 30-24.
The Flames did make a game of it but could not respond in kind and were trailing at the end of the third quarter 49-41 before folding as the Bulls took a ten point win 64-54 in the end. Only Selwyn Henry with 14 and Aubrey Johnson 13 performed well for the Flames.
The second game was a blow out for the Raiders, who never looked back after opening the first quarter with a leading 18-8 score, and by half time were up by a huge score 56-12 holding their opponents to just four points and were motoring at 68-18 at the end of the third quarter. Then they completed their demolition with an 82-23 win.
Five players for the Raiders were in double digit scores with Coel Winter leading with 13, as former nationals Abdulla Hamid and Dwayne Roberts along with Derron Montrose and Alexander each recorded 12 points apiece in the lopsided win.
The two best shoots for the falcons were Lawrence Simon and Allister Lewis.
Tonight Raiders will seek another win against the Flames, while the second game pits top guns Amelia’s Ward Jets against Victory Valley Royals at the tournament venue, the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court when the tournament continues.
