The implementation of the countrywide Operation Dragnet launched by the David Granger administration is paying off. So far, it has led to the interception and capture of a number of criminals and persons with criminal intent.
This time the security forces were just in the nick of time able to intercept a Surinamese female drug convict who was about to board a boat at a backtrack landing on her way to her home country in neighbouring Suriname.
This was said to be a well planned escape bid reminiscent of the drug cartels overseas. The female prisoner, Gwendolyn Pompey, a nurse in her native Suriname, was on remand since September on a drug trafficking charge. She was nabbed at the Ogle Airport with a quantity of cocaine.
Reports are that Pompey, since her incarceration, was observing the movement of the prison authorities and was planning her escape. She had indicated her displeasure at staying any lengthy time in the Guyanese prison.
After observing certain lapses in the way the prison authorities operate she decided to make her move. She realized that they are awakened around 04:30 hrs every day to do morning chores and tidy themselves.
She reportedly returned from Court on Friday and was taken back into the prison. The woman was also given a large sum of money during her last court appearance. After being taken out of their cells on Saturday morning, Pompey easily slipped away and made her way across the compound to one of the watch towers.
After climbing close to the tower she reportedly used a bed sheet which she had torn to climb down the wall.
The woman then hid in the prison farm for a while before making her way to a vacant house lot across the road opposite the road. The woman subsequently walked through some yards and ended up in the Ansa McAl compound at the head of Main and Essex Street. She then slipped over to the Central Masjid Compound, next door and hid there for a while.
The woman then took a car to Corriverton. Reports are that the woman was so desperate to get away that she offered the driver $10,000 after being told the fare was $7500. When she was nabbed she also had in her possession US$400 on her person.
In the meantime, after the woman had scaled the fence the authorities were alerted and the security systems were put in place. Security forces subsequently mounted a manhunt for the woman. Photographs were also circulated of the escapee. They were just in time as the woman was nabbed at the backtrack crossing as she was about to board a boat to head back to Suriname.
It is understood that the plan was for her to stay in a hotel for a few days before heading back to Suriname.
The woman was an outgoing passenger on September 19, when she was arrested at the Ogle International Airport (OIA) with 902 grams of cocaine.
The woman was also taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she excreted about 15 pellets over two days which amounted to 154 grams of cocaine.
