More than a year has passed since 31-year-old Candy Rawlins was brutally murdered by her husband and the investigation into her death appears to have ground to a halt with no effort being made to find her killer.
This is according to her relatives who are determined to get justice from the man who killed her last year.
Around 09:00 hrs on July 18, last year, the nude body of the mother of one was discovered on her bedroom floor at Crane Housing Scene, West Coast Demerara (WCD) by her daughter, who had managed to untie herself after being bound and gagged by her stepfather, Vidol Rawlins.
Rawlins’ face was wrapped in a mosquito net and bound with duct tape. Her hands were tied behind her back with a sheet.
Investigators had found a bloodstained knife next to her body and a confession letter left behind by her husband, Vidol Rawlins.
Her relatives are accusing the police of not doing enough to locate her killer. They said that after the first week of investigation, detectives completely dropped the case.
Dale LaRose, one of Candy’s relatives, had told this newspaper that after his relative was murdered, her killer called a taxi. He said that the police could have gotten a print out of the phone bill and tried to locate the driver who transported Rawlins on that day.
“The driver might have been able to say where he dropped off her husband and they could have taken (the investigation) from there,” La Rose said.
This newspaper was told that the man was spotted at his sister’s home in Georgetown; this information was given to the police but no effort was made to search the home of Rawlins’ sister.
According to a police source close to the investigation, the 11-year-old girl informed them that she was in her room when she heard her stepfather demanding sex from her mother.
She said that she “did not take the noise too serious” because constant quarrelling was a norm in the home.
“She said she went back to sleep. Early the next day her stepfather taped her mouth and tied her up in a chair,” a police source explained.
He added that the 11-year-old girl claimed that she managed to untie herself after some time and she ran to her mother’s room.
“When she see her mother, she start scream and she run and call out for the neighbours who then informed us,” the police source said.
No one reported hearing any noise.
