The Matarkai Sports Committee of Region one will be hosting a 5-a-side football competition under lights starting on December 26.
Matches will continue on December 27 with the final set for January 1, 2016. Registration closes on December 18 and can be done through PRO Orison Sealey who can be contacted on 673-1449; interested sponsors can contact Joyclene Abrams on 694-2035. The winning team will take home a trophy and $100,000, runner up a trophy and $50,000 and third place a trophy and $30,000. The top goal scorer and MVP in the final will also be rewarded. Action gets underway at 18:00 hrs.
The committee has expressed gratitude to its sponsors so far; Conrad St. Romain of C and B Variety Store of Port Kaituma, Markie Speed Boat Service and Greg Trucking Service of Charity.
Meanwhile, MSC Chairman Sherlon Rodrigues said the committee was formed on July 30 of this year with its motto being “To ensure Sports Development”. He added that Volleyball, Swimming, Football, Athletics and Cricket are among the disciplines targeted. The chairman indicated that Ryan James has been appointed by the National Sports Commission as the sports officer in the area and they will work closely with him and the Matarkai NDC.
Apart from Rodrigues, the other members of the executive are Trevor Jocintho secretary, Enoch Benjamin assistant secretary, Joyclene Abrams treasurer, Stephanie Miguel assistant treasurer, Orison Sealy PRO; the committee members are Renney Phillips, Aubrey Frazer, Natalie Jacobs, Lolita Roberio, Earl Gill and Fitzroy Nicholas.
