The Guyana defence Force is investigating reports that a foreign military Black Hawk helicopter, transporting eight armed men dressed in military fatigues, landed at the Kaikan airstrip this morning at approximately 10:45 hours yesterday.
According to the reports received from the villagers of Kaikan, and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ranks stationed in the area, the helicopter flew in from a northerly direction and landed at the southern end of the airstrip.
On landing, two men disembarked and spoke in Spanish to two female villagers who had approached the helicopter. The two men were reported to have asked the women if they had landed at San Juan, a village located in close proximity and south west of Kaikan on the Venezuelan side of the border
After being told ‘No,’ the men boarded the craft which immediately departed and flew in a southerly direction before any GDF rank could have intervened.
The two women are currently assisting ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) with their investigations.
Kaikan is an Amerindian Village located approximately 78 miles up the Essequibo River on the right bank of the Wenamu River on the Guyana side of the border.
In a release issued last night, the GDF wishes to advise the general populace that our borders remain secured and there is no immediate need for alarm.
