A man is currently in police custody assisting with the November 26, 2015 investigation into the ‘hit-and-run’ accident at Pike and Sheriff Streets, Georgetown. Dead as a result is 17-year-old Travis Bollers.
This was yesterday confirmed by Commander of ‘A’ Division, Clifton Hicken, who informed this publication that both the driver and owner of the vehicle, accompanied by a lawyer, turned themselves into the police.
He also confirmed that police have located and taken possession of the vehicle involved in the accident, GHH 5201, a white Nissan pickup. Reports had initially suggested that the vehicle was a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck but this was found not to be the case.
Acting on information, police located the ‘hit and run’ vehicle in North Sophia on Tuesday evening.
However, police were only successful in making contact with the wife of the driver at that time.
Bollers’ aunt, Debbie Rodrigues, told this publication that based on information that was filtered to the family, the driver was on the run.
Rodrigues later said that she was pleased that the police were not only able to find the vehicle involved in the accident, but also have people in custody for the crime committed.
“The police have been keeping us informed and I am pleased with the way they are operating…they promised to continue to keep us abreast,” said the woman.
The family and friends of the late Bollers on Tuesday, spearheaded a picket exercise at Square of the Revolution to express their frustration that the driver was not yet apprehended, although a number of persons were aware of the identity of the ‘hit and run driver’.
Bollers, at the time of the accident, was riding a motorcycle with his cousin, Quacy McAlman, as the pillion rider. While Bollers, who was not wearing a helmet sustained head injuries, his cousin was fortunate to escape with abrasions.
Eyewitnesses, including McAlman, had reported that the driver had looked at the accident victims before speeding away.
Rodrigues and other relatives not only expressed disappointment that the driver failed to render assistance, but that even drivers at a nearby taxi service also failed to be compassionate to her bleeding nephew. “It was a lady heading up to the East Coast who stopped and rendered assistance,” she disclosed.
“We are out here for some kind of justice to find the killer at least. We are calling on the authorities to find the killer,” said Rodrigues on Tuesday at the picket exercise. She was however, even then optimistic that the Police would get the job done as, according to her, “they are doing a great job we know, but we are out here to let other people know what’s going on…There are other people who are involved in hit and run (accidents) and the killers are never found but we are sure this killer will be found…Wherever he runs he will be found. We have to get justice… we have a great Police Force and a great Government.”
