A 35-year-old football coach was yesterday remanded to prison on a drug trafficking charge, after he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Colin John, of Lot 183 BB Eccles, East Bank Demerara (EBD), is accused of having 21 grams of cannabis sativa (marijuana) in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
He was allegedly busted with the illicit substance on November 29 at Mc Doom, EBD.
Attorney Clyde Forde requested that his client be released on reasonable bail. He told the court that John is a father of two, with no pending or previous matters.
The lawyer explained that at the time of the incident his client was the driver of a motorcar. He related that John had just dropped off someone, when his vehicle was stopped and searched by the police.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to the defendant being granted pre-trial liberty citing the gravity of the charge. He told the court that on the day in question, John’s car was stopped by the police and he was asked to exit. Jones said that the vehicle was searched and 11 transparent Ziploc bags were found in the passenger’s seat containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis. The Prosecutor added that the defendant was told of the offence committed and arrested.
The Chief Magistrate upheld the Prosecutor’s request to refuse bail on the ground that no special reasons were provided to satisfy the court.
John will return to court on January 4.
