Bartica miner fined $60,000 for stealing battery

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan ordered a Bartica gold miner to pay a fine of $80,000 after he admitted to stealing a battery when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday.
Forty-year-old, Deon Obermuller pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on November 29, at Croal Street, Georgetown, he stole a Power Master battery valued at $60,000. The battery is the property of Allister Parris, a licenced firearm holder.
Failure to pay the fine will result in the man serving a three-month jail sentence.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones told the court that Obermuller is known to the police for committing crimes of such nature.  Jones said that on the day in question, around 00:45hrs Parris was informed, by a security guard, of someone being on his premises.
The prosecutor related that the victim made checks around his yard and saw Obermuller leaving with the battery in his hand. Jones stated that Parris confronted Obermuller and another man, who were armed with knives. Jones disclosed that the men attacked Parris with their weapons and in return the man fired a shot hitting Obermuller on his right knee.
The prosecutor told the court that Parris contacted the police and they came and apprehended Obermuller.
According to the prosecutor, the stolen article was recovered.
When asked if he had anything to say before sentencing, Obermuller explained that he was merely trying to help out the man, whom he had met on Camp Street. He explained that the man requested his help with something and he complied.  He recalled that the man took him to the yard and they removed the battery. However, Obermuller stated that when Parris opened fire his partner in crime ran away.
