-thrash visitors for 3-0 lead in first game at CASH
By Edison Jefford
Guyana’s All-Star Basketball team is poised to complete a series sweep at Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) tonight after beating an Antiguan All-Star team Monday night at the same venue to take a 3-0 lead in a four-game goodwill series.
Guyana thrashed the visitors 83-57 to follow up on wins at the MSC Hard Court in Linden, and Burnham Basketball Court last weekend. The fourth and final game will be held tonight with the Guyanese anticipating an extension of dominance.
Guard, Jason Squires gifted himself 18 points ahead of his birthday yesterday to lead Guyana’s offence. Point guard, Travis Burnett was spectacular again with 16 points, while forward Akeem Kanhai supported with 13 points.
For the Antiguans, Kareem Meade had 15 points, while Adisa Harris supported with nine points.
Kareem Edwards and Dale Gore supported with seven points each.
Guyana had taken a10-4 lead with a Burnett fast-break finish midway through the first quarter, but Antigua went on an 8-3 run to haul them to within one 12-13 before Harris equalised at 14-14 with a minute to play in the quarter that ended with a 16-16 deadlock.
Meade landed back-to-back three-point jumpers to help the visitors to a 22-16 lead, but the spark of Nikkoloi Smith and Dominic Vincente ignited at the right time with Vincente nailing a 15-foot jumper and Smith finishing a left-handed lay-up to give Guyana a 24-22 lead five minutes before half-time.
The pendulum swung again when Antigua’s Marlon Charles gave his team a 30-27 lead with just under a minute left before the break, as turnovers and missed attempts at the rim somehow crept into the Guyanese game in the latter half of the quarter.
Burnett finished a floater in the lane to ensure a one-point disadvantage (29-30) at halftime. But the Antiguans went scoreless in the first three minutes of the third period as the Guyanese raced to a 35-30 lead, compliment of a 6-0 run.
Guyana continued the offensive surge with Kanhai crowning the moment with a one-handed dunk. Antigua scored just two points in the first five minutes of the third quarter to emphasise an offensive meltdown.
Squires gave the Guyanese their biggest lead of the game (56-36) with a three-point dagger. The home team closed the quarter up 60-39 with Burnett wooing the small crowd with his finishing ability from the paint. Squires began the final quarter with back-to-back shots from downtown as Guyana ‘balled’ to its third consecutive victory.
