‘Back to the Future’ Development Boxing Tournament
By Michael Benjamin
Local (junior) feather pugilist, Christopher Moore, put up a valiant fight but in the end it proved insufficient and he lost by a close 2-1 verdict to Jamaican Daniel Hylton when the action in the ‘Back to the Future’ Development Boxing Tournament continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) last Friday evening.
Local middleweight (youth) boxer, Roger Sloon also surrendered a 3-0 verdict to Barbadian, Charles Cox to register Guyana’s second loss on a night when the competition was fierce. Diwani Lampkin corrected the situation somewhat when he pounded out a points victory over Barbadian, Justin Edwards, in a light/welterweight affair, while Clairmonte Gibson boosted Guyana’s challenge with a lopsided points verdict over Dominican, Simon Joseph in their bantamweight elite open encounter.
Barbadian, Jabali Breedy, also turned in a special performance to defeat Anthony Phillis (St Maarten) in their bantamweight (youth) contest. Breedy was quite nimble, sliding in with precision combinations and then dancing to safety when his opponent retaliated. Short but dexterous, Breedy employed a sustained two fisted attack to his opponent’s body and head and after one such onslaught, the ringside doctor was summoned to examine an injury to Phillis’ nose which spurted blood.
Upon resumption, Breedy peppered the injury and forced the doctor to administer another check and this time he decided that Phillis should not continue. The time of the stoppage was 2:19secs of the third stanza.
Another entertaining encounter occurred in the lightweight division when Jemicha Jones (T&T) battled Keshan Jacoby Koaly (Guadeloupe). The latter fighter demonstrated good skill and aggression, pushing the former on the back foot with ramrod punches. The pattern continued into the second stanza when Koaly backed Jones to the ropes and unleashed a wicked combination to his head. The referee jumped in to administer the mandatory count but Jones’ corner beat him to it and threw in the towel at 1:31secs of the 2nd round.
In every tournament the heavy boys always provide entertainment and mirth for the audience and the super/heavyweight shindig between Guyanese, Eon Fraser and Grenadian, Christopher Andall, did not disappoint. The two warriors exchanged toe to toe bombs and it was apparent that the contest would not have lasted the full three rounds. The blows rained down and it was Andall who suffered the worst effects as his opponent aimed and fired with unerring accuracy.
The two gladiators continued to lash out and midway into the second round Andall received a wicked clout that staggered him. He turned his back momentarily and appeared on the verge of calling it a day but for some inexplicable reason, seemed to have experienced a change of mind and reentered the fray. It proved to be his own undoing as he was met with a barrage of blows that forced him to block up and eventually called it a night at 2:38secs of the 2nd round.
In other results Leonardo Mosquea (French Guiana) was too good for Israel Johnson (Bahamas) and forced the referee to call a halt to their light/heavyweight elite bout in 2:58secs of the second round while Mosquea’s countrywoman, Simone Cambria emulated the feat with a 3rd round TKO victory over Barbadian, Kamara Stuart in the heavyweight category. Trinidad and Tobago’s Justin Parris was also on winners’ row with a crunching knockout victory over French Guiana’s Rene Claude Dutard in 1:01secs of the first round of their featherweight contest. One fight later, Guyanese bantamweight (youth) boxer, Jamal Eastman, was gifted a walk over after his opponent, Trinidadian, Nicholas Alexander, failed to show up for their bout.
Guadeloupe light/welterweight representative, Jeremie Cointre, found the skill of Christian McDonald too much and he surrendered a lopsided points decision to the Trinidadian.
The category for those novice fighters with less than 5 bouts saw Lance Robinson of Antigua and Barbuda securing a points decision over Anguilla’s Quammaine Elie in their welterweight bout moments before Antigua and Barbuda’s Senthil Kumar prevailed on points over his Trinidadian opponent, Shakir Flemming, in a light/heavyweight affair.
Activities climaxed yesterday when the semi-finals got underway. The number of bouts surpassed 30 and the organizers were forced to commence the proceedings from 16:00hrs to facilitate all of the bouts. The final will be staged this evening at the same venue when the winners, runner-up, best boxer and other awards will be established.
