As part of efforts to sustain and promote development of the poultry industry, members of the Guyana Livestock Development Agency (GLDA) and staff of Health 2000 (Guyana) Inc. (H2K) partnered to train farmers at a demonstration farm located at Canal # 2, West Bank Demerara.
Dr. Tihul, GLDA Region Three Divisional Officer, spoke about the importance of several factors to poultry rearing including proper pen design, nutrition of the birds and odour control. He advised that abuse of antibiotics by animal rearers is problematic around the world and has resulted in disease organisms becoming resistant.
It was therefore welcoming when H2K approached GLDA for advice to construct a model broiler (meat bird) pen to test the products and to train farmers. GLDA’s Livestock Officer Mr. Panday provided regular guidance to the trial and reported that the products resulted in faster growth rates and birds were healthy, consumed less feed to rear and the odour of the pen was significantly reduced.
The visiting farmers were impressed with the poultry rearing operation they observed. Chicken farmer Jai, of Clay Brick Road, remarked that he used the products and was able to obtain a six-pound bird in six weeks, which was previously not possible.
Pig farmer, Jessamy commented that the product, Renerzyme, virtually eliminated the odour in his pens. They were also appreciative of the free products distributed at the session.
At the end of the session, Mr. Christopher Persaud, Head of Agricultural Operations for H2K said that H2K’s focus is the development of the agricultural industry in order that farmers will earn larger profits while producing healthy food and sustainably managing their farms.
Organic products are imported from India and USA and certified by accredited agencies Ecocert and OMRI, he said. Scientific studies have been done by University of Guyana students since 2013 and these have to date confirmed that H2K’s products improve the yield of wiri peppers, improve broiler chicken growth rate and reduces feed. They also control black sigatoka in plantains.
H2K is also confident that it can improve rice production so that Guyana can be highly competitive on the world market. Field tests over the past two years have seen 30 – 50% increase in yield from 100% increased tillering, to longer grains and panicles, to better grain filling.
