Hicks captures 5000m boys Open, Tiexeira takes girls 1500m Open

Andrew Hicks turned in a commendable performance to win the 5000m boys Open when the National Schools cycling championships culminated yesterday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Hicks of District six Corentyne rode brilliantly to win the contest ahead of Christopher Griffith of District 11 North Georgetown and Shaquel Agard of District 10 Upper Demerara/Kwakwani.
Shenika Tiexeira of District six captured the 1500m girls open title, while Selena Blair of District 12 East Georgetown placed second and Uranne Charles of District three West Demerara third.
Briton John of District 11 won gold in the 1500m boys U16; Casey Abrams of District five West Coast Berbice grabbed silver and Christopher Joseph of District 10 bronze.
The 1500m girls U16 title went to Destheney Lewis of District 15 New Amsterdam, while Tamera Henry of District 12 finished second and Allia Roberts of District 13 South Georgetown third.
Leona James of District 10 took the top podium spot in the 1500m girls U14 race while Annstaysha King of District four East Coast Demerara and Beyonce Ross of District six placed second and third in that order.
Emanuel Atherly of District seven Bartica won the 1500m boys U14 event, while Kasho Hardeo of District four ended in second spot and Julian DeAbreu of District 14 East Bank Demerara third.
Hicks was again in winners lane this time in the 1500m boys open; he was followed by Jormel Yearwood of District 10 and Keomo Logan of District 15 respectively.
Balram Narine of District six captured the 800m boys open; Jamual John of District 13 took the runner up spot and Silvio Inniss of District 10 third.
The 800m boys U16 was taken by Briton John of District 11, while Carim Chase of District seven placed second just ahead of Raymond Daw of District four.
Tieanna Barker of District 12 claimed the 800m girls open; Deancae Welch of District six finished second, while Andriska Mickle of District 11 took the bronze.
Kendia Don of District six bagged gold in the 800m girls U16 race, Abigail Jeffery of District 10 snared the runner up position; Sydney Solomon of District 11 was third.
Mark David of District 12 carted off the 800m boys U14 event, while Fayyad Arakhan of District six placed second; Kasha Hardeo of District four followed.
Angelee Lewis of District 15 was the winner in the 800m girls U14, while Kalika Felix of District 13 ended in second spot and Chelcia Sanchara of District 10 third.
The female open ‘devil takes the hindmost’ was won by Destheney Lewis District 15, while the boys’ equivalent was captured by Balram Narine of District six.
District six was overall winner in this event.
