An accident at West Coast Berbice (WCB) yesterday afternoon has claimed the life of a man who is said to be differently able.
According to reports, at around 12:45 hrs, 40-year-old Shermon Harper called ‘Deaf Boy’,
of Seafield Village, WCB, was about to cross the Rising Sun Public Road, on his bicycle, when he was struck by a car, PLL 9227, driven by a Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice resident.
It was reported that the impact severely damaged Harper’s body – his hand and shoulder ended up inside the car, while one foot was also severed and ended on the opposite side of the road.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the car was travelling a terrific speed and there was no brake impression. The car is said to have come to a halt some 400 metres away.
Harper was taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver is in custody as investigations continue.
