A 24-year-old father of one was yesterday remanded to prison for the murder of Festival City resident, Christopher Wharton, who was gunned down last Wednesday.
The man, Rickford Jones, 24, of Lot 3093 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was arraigned before Magistrate Fabayo Azore and was not required to plead to the indictable charge. The charge alleged that on November 18, Jones while being in the company of another murdered Wharton at Festival City, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
According to reports, Wharton called ‘Taps’ or ‘Chrissy’, of 1960 Buggy Peak Street, Festival City was shot to his hand, left butt and groin area by gunmen, known to him. It was reported that the dead man’s five-year-old son was hit on his left leg by one of the six shots fired by the men, who left Jones’ home on bicycles.
The shooting is said to have occurred around 16:50hrs.
Jones, who was represented by an Attorney, was remanded to prison until December 8, when the matter comes up again for report in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Police Prosecutor, Assistant Superintendant of Police (ASP) Stephen Telford told the court that investigations are still ongoing into the matter. He requested a two weeks adjournment to have the police file completed.
The Attorney, during her address stated that her client continues to suffer at the hands of the police. She told the court that Jones was shocked several times about his body with a taser, which had caused him to cough blood.
The lawyer pointed out that due to the agonizing torture, her client was forced to sign a caution statement
admitting to the crime.
The Attorney related that the accused was examined by a medical practitioner. However she had no medical report to support this claim.
On this note, the Prosecutor presented a medical certificate to the court. According to Telford, the medical indicated that Jones had no injuries at the time he was seen by a doctor.
In addition, the lawyer claimed that the police at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Eve Leary and the Diamond Police Station have refused to accept vital evidence from the defence in relation to the case.
After taking into consideration the allegations made by Jones’ Attorney, the Magistrate instructed that an investigation be launched. The Magistrate affirmed that such allegations are not taken lightly by the court.
