Miranda Peters, the mother of the 10-year-old who lost sight in his left eye after a squib exploded in his face on Diwali Night, is upset that police have not yet charged the individual who caused her son’s injury.
But a police official said yesterday that investigators took statements from Mrs. Peters and the injured lad. The source also said he has given orders to have the suspect charged.
Mrs. Peters, of Good- Hope/Supenaan, Essequibo, recalled that on November 11, last, she decided to take her son, Navindra Niranjan, and his other three siblings, out on Diwali night.
She said that while on the road, a man lit a squib from a diya and threw it next to Navindra. Peters said that the squib exploded and in her son’s face. The mother recalled seeing him clutching his left eye. She said she immediately took him to the Suddie Public Hospital but the staff there said the hospital was not equipped to deal with his injury.
Mrs. Peters said that she then took her son to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital, but doctors there were unable to save his eye. Peters said that her son is in constant pain and he now has to wear sun glasses.
Navindra is in Grade Five and attends the Good Hope Primary, but has not attended school since sustaining the injury. According to the frustrated mother, he was doing well in school and it hurts to see him not attending classes.
