Veteran Journalist and Editor of the Guyana Chronicle, Mohamad Raschid Osman commonly known as Raschid Osman, has passed away.
Kaieteur News understands that Osman died, peacefully in his sleep yesterday morning, at his Bent Street, Georgetown home. He was 78 years old.
Celicia Paruag, a close friend of the family, described, Mr. Osman as a very quiet, unassuming individual who was very serious about his work. His co-workers at the Chronicle shared similar sentiments.
“He was at work up to Friday night. His last assignment would have been the National Drama Festival at the National Cultural Centre,” one staffer commented.
At one time, Osman was Editor-in -Chief at the Chronicle but more recently he had been in charge of sub -editing the Sunday edition of the newspaper.
“He had a love for culture, the arts and music,” another worker said.
Up until the time of his death, Osman hosted radio programme, Midmorning Classics, on the Voice of Guyana. He also worked as an editor at the Guyana Broadcasting Corporation,(GBC). For a brief while he worked on a newspaper in Dominica.
He attended Queen’s College and later became one of the better art critics in Guyana. His Sunday reviews were used as a barometer by the public. But his forte was classical music. He hosted Sunday Concert Hall, a programme of classical music, and more recently, Mid-morning classics.
As news of Osman‘s passing spread, members of the public and media fraternity expressed their heartfelt sympathies.
In a statement, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo described Osman as a towering figure in Guyanese media and in the arts.
“His loss is an enormous blow to these fraternities and to the Guyanese society. Unfailingly committed to his work and to the arts Osman leaves a rich legacy for young journalists to emulate. His arts reviews were par excellence as was his work in radio.”
He expressed condolences on behalf of the Cabinet and the Government to all relatives and friends of the veteran Journalist.
Osman leaves to mourn his wife Yvonne, daughter Ruth, granddaughter Adia and many relatives and friends.
