After a lengthy lay off from the sport due to personal reasons, Guyanese Selvon Bruce Whatley turned in an outstanding performance at the National Gym Association (NGA) natural bodybuilding competition in New Jersey,
USA which was held on November 7.
Whatley, who was born at Annandale on the Essequibo Coast and is a former member of the Kingsrow Barbell Club, won the Men’s 35-45 category and took the runner spot in the Men’s Open. He told Kaieteur Sport that it was a challenge to take part in the competition since he learnt of his mother passing two days before he took the stage. “It wasn’t easy to continue with my preparation but I knew this is what my mother would have wanted so that motivated me and thank God I did well,” he posited.
He made a return to the sport in 2014 where he represented Guyana at the CAC games despite having to take care of his traveling and accommodation expenses.
Whatley, a former Guyana welter, middle and heavy weight champion, now resides in the USA and trains at the Waldroff Fitness Centre in Maryland.
He is now preparing for the NGO 36th annual Annapolis championship which will be held in Maryland in June 2016 and informed that he is desirous of representing Guyana at the 2016 CAC games.
The former Guyana champion said he will use the NGO championship as a preparation for the CAC games and expressed confidence of doing well. “I am getting back to where I am, but I am also aiming for greater heights,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to Mervin Moses (Spongy), Corwin Clarke and his family, whom he said were instrumental in him making a return to the sport.
