Police have captured one of the men who gunned down Festival City resident, Christopher Wharton, over a soured ganja deal last Wednesday.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said that the suspect was nabbed while attempting to head to Linden in
a minibus.
Blanhum said that police managed to apprehend the suspect at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, but while they were preparing to take him to the Golden Grove Police Station, he attempted to escape through a window.
However, the ranks managed to subdue him and take him to the station. He is likely to be charged next Monday.
Kaieteur News understands that an Attorney that the suspect has hired is alleging that his client was beaten by police. The Attorney was reportedly allowed to take photographs of his client.
Blanhum said that when investigators showed the alleged gunman CCTV footage of the attack, the man readily identified himself.
“He was interviewed and shown the CCTV footage and he pointed out himself. Then he gave the police a ball by ball statement on the role he played.”
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect told investigators that he had owed Christopher Wharton for ‘weed.’ According to reports, Wharton repeatedly asked the suspect for his money, and this escalated into a confrontation last Wednesday that ended in Wharton’s death.
Wharton, 41, called ‘Taps’ and ‘Chrissy,’ of Buggy Peak Street, Festival City, was shot in his hand, left buttock and groin during a confrontation with two men at his home. The killers reportedly fled the scene on bicycles.
Wharton reportedly identified the gunmen before succumbing at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
His son, Neshaun, was shot in his left leg.
One of his relatives who lived a few doors away said that Wharton and the gunmen had a disagreement at Last Entrance, Festival City, and that Wharton then rode home with his son.
