Guyana hunt 1st win against B’dos at home in 31 years
By Sean Devers
Defending champions and tournament leaders Guyana Jaguars will be aiming to dent the Barbados Pride when the teams meet from today at 09:30 hrs at the Providence Stadium in the third round of the WICB PLC four-day franchise cricket tournament and the Jaguars will want extend their unbeaten run in this tournament to 10 matches
The Bajan Franchise are without seven of their players who were selected for the Australia tour which starts with the first Test on December 10. Kraigg & Carlos Braithwaite, Shane Dowrich, Shai Hope, Jason Holder, Kemar Roach and Jamal Warrican are all missing leaving the visitors a depleted unit.
Guyana will be without Rajendra Chandrika, who scored his maiden ton in the first round and Devendra Bishoo due to the Australia tour and will fancy their chances of beating the Bajans in Guyana for the first time on home soil since they won by nine wickets at Bourda in 1984 when Andy Jackman made 100.
Guyana and Barbados played the very first First-Class game against each at the Garrison Savannah in Barbados in 1865. In 84 encounters since the Shell Shield began in 1966, Barbados have won 34 times and Guyana 14.
However, the Bajans will remember that the last time that Guyana lost a First-Class game it was on this very ground against the same opposition when, set 69 to win the hosts were bowled out for 67, their second lowest Regional First-Class total ever.
The Jaguars and the Pride have each scored two of the five 300 plus totals with Guyana’s 419-9 declared against the Leewards Hurricanes being the highest by any team and although without Chandrika, the Jaguars batting is arguable the strongest in the tournament and the
only team with two centurions. West Indies U-19 opener Shemron Hetymer should replace Chandrika
Vishaul Singh’s 222 runs is the most in the competition and his 150 in the last round is the highest of four hundreds scored so far. Apart from the left-handed Singh whose bat has looked as broad as the Essequibo River, every other batsman, expect opener Assad Fudadin and all rounder Raymon Reifer have had starts.
Without the injured Chris Barnwell who hurt his back in the last match, Fudadin and Skipper Leon Johnson (who got a first ball duck against the Leewards) will need to get big scores while Shiv Chanderpaul has been consistent without getting to three figures as have Anthony Bramble and Steven Jacobs, who made an unbeaten 63 batting at nine.
The addition of left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, who missed the first two games with an ankle injury, will strengthen a strong bowling attack led by 20-year-old left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who captured a 10-wicket haul in only his second match and off-spinner Jacobs who has 11 wickets so far. Only the Windwards Volcanoes’ Shane Shillingford with 17 scalps has more wickets than Motie’s 14.
With Reifer and the genuinely quick Ronsford Beaten and Fudadin as a medium pace option the Guyana bowling looks strong.
Kevin Stoute will captain Barbados Pride who made five changes to the team which drew with Trinidad & Tobago Red Force at Kensington Oval in the last round.
Wicketkeeper Mario Rampersaud, whose father is Guyanese and mother is Bajan, batsman Jonathan
Carter, left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn, fast bowler Tino Best and leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr have been included.
The Jaguars lead the points table after two rounds with 35 points, while Barbados the successful Regional team with 20 FC titles, are second, 15 points behind the defending champs.
Admission is free and NCN will once again bring live ball-by-ball commentary with Bajan Andrew Mason, Indergeet Persaud and Matthew Kissoon calling the action with Neil Barry and Clyde Butts being the comments men but thunderstorms are forcast for today.
Guyana Jaguars squad: Leon Johnson (Captain), Assad Fudadin, Shemron Hetymer, Vishaul Singh, Shiv Chanderpaul, Raymon Refier, Anthony Bramble, Steven Jacobs, Veerasammy Permaul, Ronsford Beaten, Gudakesh Motie, Keon Joseph, Jevon Searles
