Dear Editor,
Diwali, for the first time in Guyana was observed for two days. For the first day people lit diyas and hardly were there any firecrackers. This day was largely peaceful, but the next day, the celebration was one of the biggest by contrast.
On November 11th from 18:30hrs to about 20:30hrs the area around Anna Regina could have been regarded as a war zone. Firecrackers of all description were used with different intensity of sounds, with the noise level far above what is acceptable. Some even went off like missiles. The pace and intensity of this activity traumatized the residents of Anna Regina and surrounding villages.
Those greatly affected were babies and small children, and the elderly, especially those who are suffering from hypertension. One elderly woman stuffed here ears with cotton wool, yet she had to seek medical attention. People quietly bore the brunt of this lawlessness as they do not want to be seen as critics of an event of great significance. Once there is demand for a commodity and the price is right, from out of nowhere a supplier will emerge. On the day in question, a van passed around wholesaling and retailing this item. One person who attends the same mosque with me purchased a parcel valued at nine thousand dollars and gave to other person to explode. It is humorous to read in the papers that the police are on top of persons found using firecrackers.
Images of the scenes brought back memories of war zone areas like ‘Missing in Action’ in Vietnam, the war in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria. This is a far cry from what the event should symbolize. Those celebrating this event should be educated more about it. In fact the leaders of the Hindu community have a lot of important work to do.
The Hindu community has the largest amount of suicide victims among Guyana’s religious communities. This community also possesses the most alcoholics that wreck havoc on the social fabric of society. A look at the courts would reveal that most of the Indians committed to stand trial have Hindu names. The leaders need to spend time to objectively tackle these social problems.
