Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) amassed 154 points to win the Georgetown Cricket Association/Hadi’s World Inc City Mall first division round robin two day tournament which concluded recently.
Demerara Cricket Club and Malteenoes Sports Club finished second and third on 148 and 131 points respectively after eight-round of matches which commenced in 2013.
The top three teams and outstanding players were rewarded on Wednesday night at a ceremony held at the Georgetown Cricket Club.
Chairman of the competitions committee Shawn Massiah who gave a review of the competition said that the unavailability of grounds was the main reason the competition lasted that long.
Raj Nanan of GCC who finished with 48 wickets at an average of 5.25 and made 140 runs was voted the MVP, while Christopher Barnwell with 605 runs including three centuries at an average of 100.8 and 11 wickets was the best all-rounder. Charwayne McPherson of Transport SC took the best fielder award.
Other outstanding performers were Tagenarine Chanderpaul of Everest with 524 runs including two hundreds with his best being 179 against GCC; he averaged 131.
Brain Sattaur of DCC notched up the highest score 189 versus Gandhi Youth Organisation, while Barnwell struck 165 against GNIC SC.
Kevin Ross of TSC claimed 26 scalps. Nanan registered the best bowling figure in the tournament 13-37 versus MSC; he also took 11-96 against GYO while DCC’s Paul Wintz had 10-55 against GYO.
Former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd delivered the feature address while GCA head Roger Harper thanked the sponsors and congratulated the winners.
Lloyd congratulated the awardees and urged them players to work hard for continued success, and spoke on the way forward for the development of sports in Guyana. He said that athletes must be provided with the right tools they need to succeed adding that professional coaches and adequate training facilities are required. Lloyd, who has 7, 515 runs from 110 test matches at an average of 46. 67 feels the Government should develop sports programmes in schools. “Exercise can improve the performance of the brain thus the learning process. Sports provide healthy challenges and foundation for holistic development, it is a vehicle to foster peace and unity,” he posited.
Lloyd recalled the glory days of West Indies cricket stating that its people have lots to be proud of. He congratulated the Guyana team on their success so far in the PCL.
Harper said the GCA is very appreciative of the support from the sponsors and the opportunity they have given the players to showcase and develop their talent, and look forward to their continued support. He said that they have now restructured the first division competition where teams will be divided into two zones.
He thanked Lloyd and GCC for hosting the ceremony.
