Residents of Richmond Housing Scheme are relieved after a rapist who was creating havoc in that area was caught red-handed violating a mentally challenged woman on Wednesday night.
According to reports, residents were awakened by the screams of the woman who lived alone in a house donated by Food for the Poor. The woman, according to reports, was heard pleading with the intruder, “Don’t do that; don’t do that.”
Upon hearing the woman’s pleas, neighbours rushed to her rescue and caught the man, who was later identified as a resident of Reliance, Essequibo Coast.
Recently, a woman claimed that 47-year-old Leroy Smith, of Richmond Housing Scheme, raped her daughter who is confined to a room. The young woman is reportedly suffering from a form of mental illness.
Smith, who also has a pending case in the High Court, was previously implicated in the alleged rape of a domestic worker. He is on $400,000 bail.
Yesterday, a senior policeman said that he is happy now that “the real rapist has been caught”. The Reliance man had allegedly made attempts to enter the house of a teacher. Alert residents managed to prevent him from doing so.
Police are now preparing to institute charges. (Yannason Duncan)
