It was definitely an evening of glitz and glamour as 19 military women graced the stage of the National Cultural Centre (NCC), on Wednesday to compete for the title Miss Guyana Defence Force 2015.
The pageant, held under the theme “Strive to be Competitive”, was one of the many events coordinated by the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
After much deliberation by the judges, 29 year-old Lance Corporal Daniella Castillion was crowned queen. She won for herself a brand new Toyota Ist. The queen appeared amazed when she heard the announcement- tears flowed from her eyes. They were certainly tears of joy.
Castillion was crowned by Ms. GDF 2012, Sergeant Shameika Devonish.
The pageant aimed at showcasing the beauty of Guyana’s military women beyond their uniforms.
Commanding Officer of the WAC, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Natasha Stanford, told the audience that the pageant is not only about beauty. She said that it is an organized showcase of physical fitness, poise, talent, marksmanship and eloquence of military women.
The event kicked off with the delegates introducing themselves and stating their respective aims. There were many side attractions which kept patrons energized and cheery.
When Sergeant Davis of 31 SF Sqn took to the stage he mesmerized the ladies with his ‘chiseled’ physique. There was also a dance sequence by members of the National School of Dance.
As the Sergeant stole the attention of ladies in the audience with a physical display piece, the delegates went back stage to prepare for the swimsuit segment.
The stunning women graced the stage donning their teeny-tiny bikini and sky high heels. This segment was well received by the audience, as the women strutted their curvy bodies for the judges. It surely showcased the contestants’ physical attributes.
Countdown
As the competition reached its climax, tensions were high among spectators, as they decided on who should walk away with the crown. The delegates had their respective fan base in the audience. The fans would from time to time shout words of support.
The evening gown segment was overwhelmed with elegance and gracefulness. But for the contestants, it seemed like another chance for them to celebrate a different side of womanhood.
They were all attired in long flowing jewel-toned dresses that accentuated their busts and waists. An infectious smile and winning personality were all evident as the beauties emerged once more.
GT&T jingle star, Calvin Burnett, serenaded the audience with his soulful melodious voice. He had patrons jamming to his many sultry reggae tunes. Clad in a pink blazer, he sang expressively to the delegates, while giving each of them a red rose.
When this segment concluded the girls went back stage leaving the judges to tally their scores. It was time for the final five to be chosen.
Those making the cut were Private, Fambo Ramsay, 20, of Base Camp Stephenson; Lance Corporal (LCPL) Daniella Castillion, 29, of Sports Department; LCPL Tiffany Smith, 22, of Air Corps; LCPL Alicia Jack, 21, of G6 Branch and LCPL Letitia Miles of Training Corps.

After a competitive question and answer segment the night’s winners were adjudged. LCPL Myles took the first runner up spot and the best fitness title. Private Ramsay was the second runner up and was awarded Best Talent. LCPL Smith was the third runner up and the best body title. LCPL Jack the fourth runner up, was named Miss Congeniality.
