Santa and Mrs. Claus came to Main Street, Georgetown with much pomp and ceremony last evening as Courts Guyana Inc again ushered in the festive season with its annual Christmas tree Light up.
While he was the last act on the programme he did not travel alone. Accompanying him atop a well decorated truck that spurted confetti as well as fog, he brought with him fairy tale characters such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Sponge Bob, Spiderman, Tinkerbell and Dora the Explorer.
Santa’s appearance created much excitement for the thousands of children and children-at-heart who began flocking to the location from about 17:00hrs to muster a front row space to witness the colorful spectacle.
Radio personality, Nurriyih Gerrard, and DJ Akelliot hosted the onstage events that included performances from the National School of Dance as well as singers the likes of Tennecia De Freitas and Carlvin Burnett amongst others.
But the penultimate performance was done by Guyana’s reigning soca monarch, Jumo Primo, who hyped up the crowd with his many pulsating soca songs; some of which he altered lyrically to suit the many offerings that the Furniture giant has on offer for the festive season.
While Santa and his crew did not bring any toys and gifts they sure brought much merriment to the occasion.
Most memorable was not just Santa’s arrival to Mariah Carrey’s version of ‘Santa Claus is coming to Town’ which the crowd sang lustily but the sudden break away of his crew into gyrations and oscillations to some of the hot soca songs of 2015.
Among those in attendance was First Lady Sandra Granger who delivered the feature address, Tourism Minister Cathy Hughes and Deputy Mayor Patricia Chase-Greene. (Mondale Smith)
