Amidst an air of expectancy, renowned Martial Arts practitioner and movie star,
Hwang Jang Lee AKA, Silver Fox, touched down at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, early yesterday morning to engage in two full days of interaction that include workshops for local practitioners, interviews and social activities.
Director of Sport, Chris Jones, traveled to the location and met the legendary practitioner who was accompanied by Trinidadians, Shihan Andre Murray, Professor Christopher Francis, Dr. Kevin Hufford of the Dragon Fire Martial Arts Association (Intl) and Grandmaster, Eric Kovaleski. Host of Maximum Sport, Strength and Fitness, Max Massiah, was also at the forum and extended a warm welcome to the entourage.
Mr. Jones extended a hearty welcome to the group and urged them to enjoy the warm hospitality synonymous with the Guyanese culture. Mr. Jones admitted that the Silver Fox has been his childhood hero and he (Jones) was extremely delighted to share the same space with him.
The Director of Sports complimented Mr. Massiah for his efforts that facilitated the martial artist’s visit even as he committed to his government support during Jang Lee’s short sojourn.
Speaking in halting English, the septuagenarian thanked his hosts for facilitating the trip and expressed the hope that the sessions would be beneficial.
Professor Francis said that the primary purpose of the forum is to tutor youngsters in the intricacies of martial arts in order that they may inculcate character and discipline. He also pointed out that he assists practitioners to develop commendable anger management techniques. Dr. Hufford and Grandmaster Kovaleski also delivered brief remarks while endorsing their pleasure in being in Guyana for the occasion.
Shortly after the conclusion of the press conference in the VIP room, the visitors were treated to a display of skills by a group of yellow belts before they interacted with members of the public, many of whom had travelled to the airport to catch a glimpse or simply touch the hem of the garment of the martial arts icon.
Meanwhile, shortly after their arrival, Mr. Massiah presented the visitors with a jersey emblazoned with the insignia of the weekly programme.
Organizers will also host a seminar and certificates will be issued to participants. As a bonus, the certificates will bear the signatures of Jang Lee and other members of the visiting team.
Otherwise, the renowned martial artist will conform to a tight schedule which includes visits to Minister of Education, Rupert Roopnarine and Jnr Minister of Sports, Nicholette Henry. The visitors will also be the guests on several television interviews, while conforming to several other engagements including a drive through the Capital city, a visit to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, meet with martial arts officials at the North Ruimveldt (Multilateral) Secondary School, while culminating activities with a dinner. The visitors are scheduled to depart Guyana tomorrow morning. (Michael Benjamin)
