The annual competition which has swarmed many communities across the regions was launched yesterday in the Boardroom of Banks DIH, Thirst Park and in attendance at the occasion were Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste, Communications Manager of the Company Troy Peters, Petra Organisation Co-Director Troy Mendonca and Aqua Mist Brand Manager Errol Nelson.
Baptiste speaking at the Launch said tonight’s action marks the commencement of the street football season, adding that this year which is the sixth since the tournament’s birth is projected to be a big one, judging from the overwhelming level of interest expressed amongst the various communities.
He revealed that the popularity has grown to the level where they’ve exceeded last year’s quota when 52 teams were confirmed that necessitated a playoff for the remaining spots, while this year, the total has risen to 63.
Baptiste said that teams from the East Bank of Demerara and West Coast Demerara had to merge so as to allow representation from the other communities.
He urged teams to display a high degree of discipline throughout the event, informing that any team found in breach of the rules or engage in any form of indiscipline will be disqualified with immediate effect by the Organisers.
The Guinness Brand Manager disclosed that over $1million in prize monies and trophies will be up for grabs with the winning team set to receive $500,000, runner-up $200,000, 3rd place $150,000 and 4th place $100,000.
Mendonca, who has been at the helm of the event from its inception said thirty-two teams will participate in the competition and they’ve been divided into eight groups of four for the preliminary phase.
