Firecrackers may seem like much fun to add to the merriment of celebrations at this time of year, but the Guyana Revenue Authority and the Guyana Police Force have dubbed the items as prohibited.
In fact, the Guyana Police Force has embarked on an aggressive zero tolerance campaign in all Policing Divisions across Guyana, to clamp down on the sale and use of firecrackers and other illicit explosive devices.
In an effort to have accident free holidays, the anti smuggling unit of the Guyana Revenue Authority, Law Enforcement and Investigation Division embarked on a campaign to rid the streets of dangerous explosives (fire crackers and explosive flares) which are prohibited under the Customs Laws.
These materials are dangerous, according to GRA sources, and can inflict severe damage to lives and properties.
In an advisory the GRA, LEID is advising the public against sale, purchase and use of these materials.
The police initiative has already seen positive results where ranks have swooped down on several stalls in the Stabroek and Bartica Markets, where several large quantities of various kinds of illicit explosives were discovered, seized and destroyed.
Several persons are in custody, charges are already instituted and they are to appear in court shortly.
Anyone with information relating to the sale or storage of these dangerous explosive materials is being advised to call the Guyana Revenue Authority holiness on Tel: 2276060 or 2278222 ext 1200, 1201 and 1202.
Meanwhile research has shown that fireworks can cause stress, terror and even death for both domestic and wild animals. During the festive season firecrackers cause a high incidence of pets running away or getting lost.
The loud and unexpected noises are both painful to animals which have much more sensitive hearing and are extremely frightening since these are noises that are unpredictable, unexpected and they come from all directions.
According to veterinarians, frightened animals can sometimes do very surprising things including, jump out of what was previously considered secure containment, or act out in unexpected ways as a result of panic – including biting familiar people.
Some animals experience such great stress from fire crackers that they can actually die from fear.
