Approximately a month after being burnt by a power cable which was shot off the post by an off duty policeman, 21-year-old Lukeisha Clarke is still at the Georgetown Public Hospital receiving treatment.
Lukeisha Clarke, who is six months pregnant with her first child, sustained serious burns to her head, legs, arms and back. So far, she has had two surgeries which were supposed to successfully graft her back, due to the severe damage. However, another two surgeries will have to be done to ensure the graft holds.
Clarke’s mother said that while the surgery is needed now, doctors are reluctant at the moment as the continuous surgeries could possibly have negative effects on the fetus. As such, they have decided to conduct the surgeries far apart in an effort to keep the baby safe.
Her mother stated that her daughter is in constant pain, but she cannot use pain medication due to her pregnancy.
Clarke was said to often seem depressed and reclusive. “It’s like she taking on everything,” recounted the tearful mother. “She doesn’t talk much and everything you got to do for her; turn her, feed her and take her around.”
The mother said that it is becoming extremely difficult to continue taking care of Lukeisha, as she has to take care of her three other school aged children. She said that she was only employed by the National Insurance Scheme three weeks ago.
Due to the daily visits to her daughter at the hospital, transportation costs come up to approximately $7,000 per week. She lives in Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara.
Due to Lukeisha’s injuries, she has been put on a strict diet of fruits, vegetables and Supligen. This has placed an additional strain on her mother who feels as if she is in this alone.
“No one calls. The boy (police officer who shot the power cable) or his family never come. All we hear is the boy get loose. My daughter still in hospital and he already get loose and no one tell us nothing. The only way I getting through this is by praying to God and asking him for strength.”
However, owners of “Good Times” bar in front of which Lukeisha was shocked, has opened an account at Republic Bank in her name and placed $30,000 into it. The mother of Lukeisha is asking for assistance from the public to help her in taking care of her daughter as she is currently doing this alone. The account number of Lukeisha Clarke is 1004506.
